The narrative is linear time, starting on May 4, 1771 and ends with the burial of Werther on Boxing Day. The place where it happens most of the time has no name, though Werther says in the letter of May 26, he has built his cabin a mile from the village of Wahlheim (in the author's name is changed from the original reasons not described)
